Both the CD6006 UK Edition and PM6006 UK Edition follow on from the CD6006 and PM6006, which both launched in 2016, and won not just What Hi-Fi? five-star accolades, but also the EISA 2016-17 Award for Best European Stereo System, in recognition of their exceptionally high standards of performance and spectacular value for money. For the UK Editions, the audio tuning team has revisited these two models, improving components throughout to deliver even better sound. A new UK Edition logo was also designed, which incorporated the Union Flag, setting them apart from the standard models.
The tradition of Marantz Special Edition models stretches back more than 30 years; in 1986 Ken Ishiwata – now Marantz Brand Ambassador – developed the idea of taking existing models and tuning them to achieve maximum performance. His conviction was that even affordable audio components could be true Hi-Fi products in terms of sound quality, while keeping them affordable for newcomers of high-quality audio.
The first model to be tuned was the CD-45, which he tuned to create the CD-45LE (Limited Edition). Marketed in the UK as ‘the most musical CD player in the world”, it was made in an edition of just 2000 units, which sold out in two weeks!
Since then, Marantz has made Special Edition and Limited-Edition models, and the acclaimed Ken Ishiwata Signature range, for music-lovers and Hi-Fi enthusiasts; now comes these dedicated UK Edition of the CD6006 and PM6006 solely for the demanding UK market, marking the fact that the original LE model of 1986 was also a UK-exclusive design.
Both the CD6006 and PM6006 were originally designed with selected audio components, but for the UK Edition models further enhancements have been made in sound-critical areas, giving the new models even more performance, and bringing the listener even closer to their favourite music by enhancing both dynamic ability and soundstage focus.
CD6006 UK Edition: make more of your favourite discs
The CD6006 UK Edition is built on solid foundations: the CD6006 on which it is based is a highly-optimised CD player drawing on more than 30 years of Marantz CD player design, and incorporating technology found in the company’s flagship models.
A high-quality CS4398 DAC is used, as well as an oversized power supply, with separate outputs for both the digital and analogue sections of the player. In the UK Edition this has been enhanced with the use of special ELNA power supply capacitors – as ever, chosen by the Marantz team after extensive listening tests. As well as standard CDs, the CD6006 UK Edition can play WAV, MP3, AAC and WMA files from USB storage, and has a front-panel USB port for the connection of iOS devices such as iPhone and iPods.
The player uses the famous Marantz HDAMs (Hyper Dynamic Amplifier Modules) in its analogue output stage, for signal purity, and also has an HDAM-powered headphone output with its own gain control
PM6006 UK Edition: power, control and flexibility
The very first Marantz products were amplifiers – Saul B Marantz launched the company in 1953 with his Consolette preamp: the PM6006 UK Edition builds on that experience with power, flexibility and excellent performance – all at an affordable price.
45W per channel of wide-band amplification gives it more than enough power for most rooms and speakers, as well as analogue inputs. This includes a MM Phono for a turntable and the PM6006 UK Edition also has three digital inputs (two optical and one coaxial) for digital sources. The digital-to-analogue conversion uses the same CS4398 DAC found in the CD player, while Marantz HDAM-SA 3 amplification modules ensure a wide-open, detailed and dynamic sound, aided by a custom-built toroidal transformer for generous power supply.
To enhance the performance of the amplifier, the PM6006 UK Edition again uses those selected ELNA capacitors in its power supply for the digital stage and preamplifier, along with sound-optimising mechanical changes to the power amplifier stage.
